With the help of the “Hello I’m a PC and I’m a Mac” adverts, Apple has laughed Microsoft and all its allies out of their dominant position in the consumer computer market. The Apple Mac is the must-have-machine throughout most of the US and, as long as Apple continues to expand its retail chain, it will gradually dominate the world, in time. From an advertising perspective, Microsoft’s fight back has imho been weak (see Microsoft Fights Back Against Apple and Microsoft, Am I Missing Something) Those ads were teasers, but they failed to even mention the 800lb gorilla in the room.
These ads were followed by a series of ads which showed everyone from a dancing diva to a deep sea diver mentioning that they used PCs. I’m not sure what the expected impact was on the consumer, but there’s no evidence that consumers started to bin their Macs and rush to Vista. It seems that Microsoft simply didn’t seem to care to go head to head with Apple.
By contrast Matt Groening had no qualms about doing exactly that. If I were in charge of the Microsoft ad budget I’d look into hiring him to create a series of ads, and failing that (he’s never prostituted his art before) I’d simply buy the rights to the following clips from the Simpsons show and play them endlessly on cable TV, unchanged. It’s great satire and it might just tarnish the Apple brand a little.
Note: I originally put a YouTube video clip here, but it has been repeatedly taken off Youtube There appear to be one of those Youtube tug-of-wars going on, where a company keeps requesting that a video clip be taken down and someone else just puts it right back up again. I have given up any attempt to keep the video current. however it is worth watchng so I recommend going to Youtube.com and searching on “Apple Simpsons” and you may find it.
