The Avatar of Sam Palmisano (from the series: The IT Executives Gallery)

The image above is “Courtesy of International Business Machines Corporation. Unauthorized use not permitted.” – I’m obliged to inform you. What the picture shows is the Second Life avatar of IBM Chairman and CEO, Sam Palmisano, meeting with IBM employees and researchers in a Second Life replica of Beijing’s Forbidden City.

Palmisano’s avatar turned up here to announce IBM’s creation of a new business unit dedicated to applying virtual world technologies to real life. IBM is well in the lead in this area of computing, and despite my reservations (see The Campaign For Real Life) I have no doubt that virtual worlds, or at least virtual 3D interfaces will happen.

Why? Read How Could A Metaverse Be Useful?, which is followed by an interesting set of exchanges.
